PASSAGEWAYS TO WINDOWS THAT DON'T CLOSE

Photobucket

I discovered these photos by James Pomerantz on Beautiful/Decay, a blog which never fails to inspire.

The pictures were taken in Mexico at the site of a natural sinkhole which connects to a subterranean body of water. Ancient Mayans used the cenote as a source for fresh water and also believed that it was a portal to the afterlife.

Pomerantz says that the caves are not actually as dark as they appear in the photos, but that he intentionally isolates the sunshine in order to heighten the sense of isolation and mysticism.

MIRROR, MIRROR

Photobucket

I'm pretty sure that Francisco Infante-Arana and Nonna Gorunova must own a shoddy, prehistoric, and suicidal computer just like mine. That's why they've relied upon old-fashioned tricks like mirrors and shadows to create the ambiguities present in their photographs. Or at least, that's the only reason I can surmise for the amount of detailed planning and accurate execution these must take. Nevermind photoshop, these are amazing all on their own!

See more here.

ANDREW CLARK

Currently inspired by these illustrations by Andrew Clark. They're all about contrast; nature versus science, realistic versus geometric imagery, black and white versus colour. All valid points of view from which to view the world.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEGAN!

Since pirates seem destined to invade all of your affairs, I predict that today will be no different. If you can't have Johnny Depp, I suppose you'll have to make do with Captain Morgan. I drink tonight in your honour! Miss you lots!

I love the idea behind these photos. This kind of project could be put to highly effective use here in Winnipeg, where the most beautiful old downtown architechture has been degraded to the point of housing nothing more than Giant Tiger discount outlets or worse yet, nothing.

SUNDAY SWEETS

In case you were unaware, I work at a bakery specializing in custom cakes. Since I've produced no recent artwork which I deem of a quality worthy of internet exposure, I've decided to start posting some of the cakes I create at work. This is one that I made for our display booth at the Wonderful Wedding Show. It has regrettably been dubbed "The Sex and the City cake" against my will. Curse Sarah Jessica Parker! Anyways, an homage to the movie was not my intention.

Photobucket

Apologies for the greenish picture quality. The cake is actually ivory and white with pale, pale pink accents. The bottom box and the off-set lid were made by pre-measuring strips of fondant to size and then assembling them onto the cake after they had dried. All the brand names have been hand painted with food colouring and vodka. The shoes, wild roses, and lace, were all made with gumpaste. The stripes on the hat box were handpainted, and the rope detailing was made with fondant. The little silver frame to the left is just a "Do not touch : FRAGILE" sign, which everybody ignored completely. Despite excessive poking and petting, however, the cake sustained only one breakage when my sister whacked the lace into a doorframe during transit. Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Photographs by Christian Chaize currently on display at Jen Bekman Gallery. Chaize returns to the same stretch of Portuguese coastline to take each new photograph with the expectation that each new photo will either aid or further confuse his understanding of the space, its meaning, and its personal significance to him.

Some of his prints are available for purchase on 20x200.

PIGSSSS INNNN SPAAAAAACE

Click HERE. Apparently these recordings are used to treat various afflictions such as depression and sleep disorders and are used by psychotherapists around the world.

....cool? Sometimes the world just fascinates me. Humans are a strange, strange species.

The picture above is of Laika, the first living creature in space. She died what was probably a very painful death after overheating occured in the vessel shortly after it entered space.

Multi-coloured illustrations by Mark Whalen AKA Kill Pixie that I can only assume were inspired by hundreds and thousands AKA coloured sprinkles.

I think my favourite part about these drawings is their composition. While they appear at first glance to be completely nonsensical and seizure-inducing, they're actually perfectly symmetrical and calculated.

HUMAN LASERS

The idea behind [Hu]Man vs. Machine is that humans can create the same output as computers but with different products. The project includes acrylic paintings as well as ink drawings, but I absolutely love the 'laser' installations made with coloured string.

This week's goal is to finally start the schoolbag I've been planning on making for months and months now. These images from designer Ji Won Jahng on Not Just A Label are inspiring me to sew. The colourful bits are made by applying crumpled up bits of chiffon by hand.

SYDNEY INK

Photobucket

One of the reasons that I keep this blog is so that I can collect all the things that inspire me and keep them in one constant space rather than six million moleskins, folders, boxes, and sketchbooks. What I did not anticipate was the establishment of numerous patterns, including the frequent posting of pen and ink drawings as well as sketches of buildings.

Adding another to the list, these illustrations are by Sydney-based artist Helen Nehill. I love her crooked, hazy depictions of urban architecture.
